Abstract: Tonga is one of the breeding areas for the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the South Pacific Ocean. Tongan waters serve as breeding habitat for humpback whales as the species migrates into Tonga during winter (May – November) after spending their summer season feeding in Antarctic waters. The whale song repertoire and the presence of humpback whales, including calves were monitored for this migrating subpopulation for one season in 2014. Songs from the 2014 season were compared to song data collected from a pilot study in Tonga in 2012 and 2013. Over 60 whale songs were recorded using a hydrophone. The findings of this study will be a useful and unique contribution to the available data on the humpback whales in Tonga.
