Abstract: Solomon Islands relies heavily on fish as a major source of animal protein, as well as for income generation, livelihood and food security. However, the future forecast of fish supply suggests that coastal fisheries alone will not be able to cater for future food security. With limited alternative sources of animal source foods, land-based aquaculture has been identified as one option to supply future fish in the country. Milkfish Chanos chanos (Forskal 1775), an indigenous fish species, has been identified within the Solomon Islands aquaculture development strategy as having potential for low cost aquaculture. This study aims to improve understanding of the capture-based milkfish aquaculture in Solomon Islands through three research objectives. These are (i) to determine the occurrence and abundance of milkfish fry within a particular location; (ii) to trial the nursery and grow-out phases of milkfish aquaculture and (iii) to determine the economic viability of milkfish culture in Solomon Islands.
