Abstract: This thesis covers an examination of the right to adequate housing for women within the Fiji context. The purpose is to examine gender discrimination within the framework of the international human right to adequate housing. The method employed by the author involved a literature review examining the themes of security of tenure, affordability and availability and gender discrimination. Furthermore she conducted in depth interviews with women from the rural and urban areas to examine how gender as a factor contributes to discrimination in accessing adequate housing. The findings conclude that women’s experiences are not reflected in state housing policy and women’s housing security conditioned by their relationship with male relatives, the secondary status of women in their husbands’ village, women’s lack of participation in decision making, women’s exclusion from state policy making, the lack of knowledge of their human rights and the impact of domestic violence. in accessing adequate housing. Recommendations focus on the inclusion of women in policy making, support for gender mainstreaming and human rights and the importance of human rights monitoring by civil society and the state to strengthen accountability in the area of adequate housing.
