Abstract: This study looked at the perceptions of students’ and teachers’ of Year 8 external examination and class based assessments (CBA) in Rakiraki schools in Fiji. The study involved Year 8 students, Year 8 teachers and Ministry of Education (MoE) officials such as exams and assessment unit. This research aimed to investigate how student learning is affected by external examination and how students and teachers feel about the current external examination practices, especially when it has been brought back into the education system after a lapse of four years.
